The 2016 Kaikōura Earthquake caused unprecedented, extensive damage and disruption to communities, infrastructure and people’s lives throughout Kaikōura and Marlborough.

The Marlborough Kaikōura Trail Trust envisions the Whale Trail to be a world-class cycle trail that will be enjoyed by visitors and locals alike.

It can provide an outstanding recreational experiences while boosting our earthquake-affected communities by generating lasting economic, social and environmental benefits.

Forming the missing link

As a year-round offering, the trail could become an important, sustainable link to enhance our regional and national tourism infrastructure.

The Whale Trail would build on existing regional tourism drawcards including Marlborough’s wine industry and Kaikōura’s whales and many tourist offerings, and celebrate our culture, history, breathtaking scenery and fantastic local hospitality.

The trail can also link to other trails and visitor experiences, such as the Queen Charlotte Track, Link Pathway, Molesworth Muster and Hurunui Heartland rides.
