A huge thank you to the team at Rotary South Blenheim for their generous donation of time, skills and hard work to get our new The Whale Trail shelter installed and ready for use in time for the Flaxbourne Open Day on 11 April 2025.

Trail Manager, Nigel Muir said, "Connecting communities through partner engagement is one of The Whale Trail's four pillars in our vision for delivering and exceptional trail between Picton to Kaikoura, so it's wonderful to have an enthusiastic and skilled local community group join us to enhance the experience along the trail."

Working under tight time constraints, Neville White and the team of Rotarians completed the entire build in just three weeks—an outstanding achievement that speaks to their commitment and community spirit.

We'd also like to thank our partners, Tira Crown, for the donation of the steel for the roof, Equus for the paint, and Robinson Construction for their help with the materials.

Located in Ward, the shelter is purposely position directly opposite the new Flaxbourne Heritage Centre so that when construction on this part of the trail is complete and it's open to the public, riders will be able to park at the shelter whilst they explore the centre. Designed for both walkers and cyclists, we hope this shelter offers a place to sit, rest, and take in the scenery, while also providing protection from the elements.
