Planting a very special place

The Blue Hole, cleared of weeds and ready to be replanted

It’s that time of the year again and keen to have volunteer assistance next Tuesday with restoration planting at this very special site. The wetland is a recognised Significant Natural Area (SNA) and now with the willows removed, we can replant using local native vegetation.

The landowners, Ivan & Kerri Fearn, will be there along with MDC and Fonterra who are key stakeholders in this project and have also been invited. We're very lucky to have students from Marlborough Boys College forestry module heading out to assist with planting.

There are many native plants and trees to go in here, around the wetland and along swale drains so the more people, the easier it will be. We do plan to pre-dig many of the holes and the with the Marlborough College Boys and volunteers we intend to get all 800 plants in the ground.

If you think you would like to help please let us know at info@thewhaletrail.nz Sturdy footwear and/or gumboots, gloves and a shovel will be useful and lunch and a drink.

The site is easy to find on your the left hand side of Speeds Road.  Parking is available in the paddock, on the left past the planting site or park on the road edge just before the paddock gate. We'll have signs to direct you there!
