This section of the trail invites you to step into the region’s rich farming heritage, tracing the roots of New Zealand’s early pastoral traditions and the landscapes shaped by some of the country’s earliest farmers.
As you climb toward The White Road lookout, you’ll be rewarded with sweeping coastal views. From there, wander through open farmlands on your way to New Zealand’s historic salt works, a unique glimpse into one of the country’s lesser‑known rural industries.
Continue along the pastoral strip of Cliffords Road toward Ward, where the Lake Elterwater Restoration Project offers a peaceful pause. Keep your eyes open for the many species of waterbirds that now thrive in this wetland.
Round out your journey with a visit to the newly opened Flaxbourne Heritage Centre. It’s the perfect place to immerse yourself in the stories, artefacts, and people who shaped this remarkable region.
