Breathtaking views, famous surf spots, kai moana, watch out for marine life

At the south side of the Hapuku River, enjoy a delightful native bush trail along the true right of the river towards the coast. You then head South along the coastal area on quiet rural roads before an 3.3km off road section through the costal dunes towards the Whale Watch headquarters. 


A series of coastal boardwalks leads you into the centre of Kaikoura town centre. Look out for whales, dolphins, seals along the way as well as the endangered Hutton Shearwater bird which is unique to this area.

From 7am on Sunday 13th October to 5.30pm on Monday 14th October 2024 the Factory Rd/Old Beach Rd/Hapuku Rd Railway Crossing in Hapuku Village will be closed while the crossing is replaced.

 

Although the road will be closed we have been informed that workers will escort you across the tracks if you are willing to walk and carry your bike. Please be patient while you wait to be escorted and cross with care.

Kaikōura town - Middle Creek section

Change of trail layout.  New safer exit from Whale Trail to Old Beach Road including gradient reduction.

Make use  of the stopping area to regroup and check for traffic before heading  over Middle Creek bridge and off towards the Hapuku Bush Trail section
