From Ward, the trail is entirely off-road.  Leaving town you head south, meandering through farmland to the picturesque Mirza Creek. After weaving through the cabbage trees you reach the coast, where you can see north up the coast to the Needles, or south towards Kaikoura. You then continue south along the coast to the Waima River. After crossing the river you wind through the sand dunes to a suspension bridge over the Tirohaunga Stream, after which it runs along the seaward side of the railway line to Kekerengu.

More winding trail takes you down the southern side of the Single Hill to the Waima River. The trail then winds along the coast and through the sand dunes to a suspension bridge over the Tirohaunga Stream, after which it runs along the seaward side of the railway line to Kekerengu.
